Known as Castelao, Afonso Daniel B. Castelao was born in the seaside town of Rianjo on January 30, 1886 and died in the exile in Buenos Aires on January 7, 1950. He always loved Galicia, autonomous community of Spain, situated to the north of Portugal, and bathed by Atlantic Ocean. For the Galician, Castelao was as important as Rabindranath Tagore for Bengal. He dedicated all his life to this land as a writer in all genres- namely, short stories, plays, novels and essays- artist, designer, thinker and a good politician, in the sense according to Plato. His most remarkable books are of drawings, in which the true soul of Galicia is reflected with its social, cultural and political problems- some universal, of the terrible civil war (1936-1939), which still has its sequels in Spain. 

This is an anthology of the drawings of the series Cousas da vida (1925)-a series on Children, the Old, Animals, Women, Men and Leaders, with their corresponding texts, selecting those that may be understood by Bengalis.

কাস্তেলাও নামে সমধিক পরিচিত আফোন্সো দানিয়েল বি কাস্তেলাও-এর জন্ম ১৮৮৬ সালের ৩০ জানুয়ারি সমুদ্রতীরবর্তী রিয়ানষো-য়, আর মৃত্যু ১৯৫০ সালের ৭ জানুয়ারি, আর্জেন্তিনায়, নির্বাসনে। তাঁর বড় প্রিয় ছিল গালিজা, পর্তুগালের উত্তরে অবস্থিত স্পেনের একটি স্বয়ংশাসিত অঞ্চল, যার দু' দিক ঘিরে রয়েছে অতলান্তিক মহাসাগর। গালিসীয়দের কাছে কাস্তেলাও-এর গুরুত্ব ততখানিই,  বাঙালিদের কাছে রবীন্দ্রনাথের গুরুত্ব যতটা। লেখক হিসেবে এই অঞ্চলের জন্য তিনি তাঁর জীবন উৎসর্গ করেছিলেন ছোট গল্প, নাটক, উপন্যাস, প্রবন্ধ ইত্যাদি সব রকমের সাহিত্য রচনা করে। এ ছাড়াও তিনি ছিলেন শিল্পী, রেখাচিত্রী ও প্লেটোর সংজ্ঞানুযায়ী ভালো একজন রাজনীতিবিদ। এর মধ্যে বিশেষ গুরুত্বপূর্ণ হল তাঁর চিত্র-সম্বলিত বইগুলি, গালিসীয়দের সম্পূর্ণ সত্তা যাতে প্রতিফলিত হয়েছে। সেখানে গালিজার সামাজিক, সাংস্কৃতিক ও রাজনৈতিক নানা সমস্যার প্রকাশ ঘটেছে। তার বিছু সর্বজনীন- যেমন ১৯৩৬-৩৯ ব্যাপী ভয়ঙ্কর গৃহযুদ্ধ, যার ছাপ আজও স্পেনের জীবনে রয়ে গেছে। 

এর মধ্যে মহিলা, পুরুষ, শিশু, বৃদ্ধ, রাজনৈতিক নেতা আর পশুপাখিদের ওপর ছবির সিরিজ 'কোজাশ্ দা ভিদা' (১৯২৫) থেকে এই সংকলনে সেই সমস্ত ছবিই নির্বাচন করা হয়েছে, বাঙালিদের পক্ষে যা বোঝা সহজ হবে।
